What We Do

Jacaranda Health

Jacaranda Maternity

Jacaranda Health is a non-profit that works

to improve quality of care in public hospitals –

where the vast majority of low income women

deliver their babies.

Alongside the Ministry of Health

and [foundations] we adapt

and replicate our innovations.

Our innovations are low-cost

and therefore sustainable

and scalable in public health system.

Jacaranda Maternity is our social enterprise maternity hospital

which is growing as a model for the private sector.

and emergency obstetric care.

SMS PROMPTS Program

Our SMS tools inform and educate pregnant women and mothers

so that they seek care at the appropriate time.

PROMPTS is an evidence-based SMS post-partum package that

positively influences care-seeking behaviours at critial moments.

When PROMPTS is fully integrated within the health system, costs can be reduced to $0.13

through bulk SMS services and the use of intelligent technology such as chatbots.

HOW PROMPTS WORKS

Co-designed with mothers and piloted at a large public facility in 2016, PROMPTS is based on an SMS service used at our maternity hospital.

Through SMS, women receive a postpartum checklist, postnatal care messages and postpartum family planning.

Nurse Mentorship Program

We have created a program that facilitates experienced nurses to coach and mentor public nurses, improving skills and sustaining gains.

It costs $14,600 to engage 200 nurses in our program for 6 months. This is the same as running a less effective, 1 day, off-site training.

We are working to reduce these costs by optimising program operations.

IMPACT

Onboarding

There is a 6 week onboarding process for new mentors. They shadow experienced mentors at Jacaranda Maternity.

Recruitment

We recruit experienced nurse midwives. These can be public  sector staff on secondment.

Deployment

Complete defined curriculum of CMEs (whats this?) and drills, with mentor-to-mentor meetups and back end M&E support.

Research and Innovation

INTERGROWTH 21st

INTERGROWTH-21st is a global, multidisciplinary network of researchers and clinicians who are dedicated to improving perinatal health globally and committed to reducing newborn deaths that occur as a result of preterm birth or poor intrauterine growth.

We implemented and evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of INTERGROWTH 21st standards for fetal and newborn growth.

We did so by gathering key insights on what would be required to integrate fetal and newborn growth standards into the Kenyan health system.

Implementing these standards led to a reduction in inductions for post-date among ANC clients, and a decrease of cesarean sections among ANC clients who received a gestational dating scan.
